Paramount Network has renewed Yellowstone for Season 2, the cabler has announced.
The 10-episode second season enters production shortly, for a 2019 premiere.
In Yellowstone, Kevin Costner stars as John Dutton, who controls the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, under constant attack by those it borders – land developers, an Indian reservation, and America’s first National Park. It is an intense study of a violent world far from media scrutiny – where land grabs make developers billions, and politicians are bought and sold by the world’s largest oil and lumber corporations. Where drinking water poisoned by fracking wells and unsolved murders are not news: they are a consequence of living in the new frontier. It is the best and worst of America seen through the eyes of a family that represents both.

“Yellowstone” chronicles the Dutton family, led by John Dutton (Costner), who controls the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States. Amid shifting alliances, unsolved murders, open wounds, and hard-earned respect – the ranch is in constant conflict with those it borders – an expanding town, an Indian reservation, and America’s first national park.
Oscar(R) nominated screenwriter Taylor Sheridan (“Wind River,” “Hell or High Water” and “Sicario”) returns as the showrunner and a writer for the series.
Executive producers for “Yellowstone” are John Linson, Art Linson, Taylor Sheridan, Kevin Costner and David C. Glasser. Ted Gold and Lauren Ruggiero are the executives in charge of production for Paramount Network.
Following a record-setting debut that attracted 5.3 million viewers, the series now ranks as cable’s most-watched series behind “The Walking Dead.” Season to date, the series is averaging 5 million viewers and registering a 1.4 rating with P 18-49, 2.0 P 25-54 and 1.9 W 24-54. The success of “Yellowstone” marks the six-month-old network’s third successful scripted launch in a row. Back in January, the limited-series “Waco,” which scored three Emmy(R) nominations, premiered to the best ratings for an ad-supported cable drama debut in nearly six months. In June, the network’s first scripted-comedy “American Woman,” bowed to the highest P/W18-49 and W25-54 ratings for an ad-supported cable scripted half-hour series premiere since early January.

This is a very good program. In TV language when a miniseries has gotten great ratings, the response is; “It was always planned to be a renewed series”. When the ratings are not good, the response is; “It was always planned to be a one season miniseries”.
Yellowstone sees Kevin Costner back in the west in the modern era. He’s always very good, even though, the program is sometimes uneven. Yes, there is violence. Yes, there are dirty words, (including the f-word). Yes, bare breasts and rear ends are on sometimes on display. Yes, Kevin Costner is a person who will use almost any means to achieve his goals, including occasionally having someone killed, or jailed, who stands in his way.
This is a very intelligent adult PG-13 program that is recommended for mature audiences and is one of the better summer airing shows.
