NYPD Blue is reviving with a sequel series at ABC.
Casting on the cancelled cop drama’s new iteration is already under way, per Deadline:
ABC has given a pilot production commitment to NYPD Blue, a new iteration of the iconic cop drama that will revolve around the son of Dennis Franz’s Detective Andy Sipowicz character from the original series. The reboot hails from NYPD Blue alums Matt Olmstead, Nick Wootton and Jesse Bochco. The pilot, a co-production between 20th Century Fox TV, which was behind the original series, and ABC Studios, is already casting its four main roles of NYPD cops, led by Theo.
Unfortunately for all Andy Sipowitz fans, in the sequel his character is dead. The return of NYPD Blue follows his son, Theo, as he tries to earn his detective shield and work in the 15th squad while investigating his father’s murder. Theo seems to have taken after his father as he too is a hard-drinking, hard-headed and quick-witted cop.
The original NYPD Blue was cancelled after 12 seasons in 2005.
Should NYPD Blue get a second chance at life? Should it stay cancelled forever? Stay tuned…

Yet another revival!?
Where are the new ideas?
Are there any talented writers left in Hollywood?
But, I would welcome any new show that doesn’t weave some writers, or producers politics into the story. It is possible to tell stories about government and government agencies without lecturing.
There are too many options out there these days. The minute a show starts pushing a single political story line. I stop watching that show, without regard to who’s involved.
If the new version of NYPD Blue can tell a good story about life in law enforcement, fine. But, all you have to do is watch some of the reality shows like “The First 48”, to realize that most TV cops shows are not realistic.
Real cops are not wracked by indecision, guilt, sorrow, you name the emotion. They are doing a job, and while doing their job, their emotions and personal politics take a back seat to the LAW, and getting justice for the people wronged by criminals.
