History has cancelled Vikings after its upcoming sixth season.
The cabler has opted not to renew the historical drama for Season 7.
The sudden cancellation announcement comes months after the show was renewed for Season 6.
Despite the cancellation, History is plotting a Vikings spinoff series which would continue the franchise.

As the hit drama is wrapping, History, Vikings creator Michael Hirst and studio MGM Television, are looking to extend the Vikings franchise with a new series. I’ve learned that the network is in talks with MGM and Hirst about a new series from the same creative team as the original series, which would continue the Vikings saga. If the offshoot project, which is in early stages, moves forward, Hirst will be joined by feature writer Jeb Stuart (Die Hard, The Fugitive).
Vikings, which will end its run after a total of 89 episodes, is currently halfway through airing the back 10 episodes of its 20-episode fifth season, with the finale slated for Jan. 30.
The 20-episode sixth — and now final — season is slated to close out the series in 2019, TVShowsCancelled.com can confirm.

One of the best, most interesting and in some ways informative show ever on TV. I hate to see it be cancelled.
Loved the show the first couple of season,then it started going in to many directions,.they had a great core group,should have stuck with them,and then expanded out with the storyline,in a sensible and timely manner,still though love the fact that my wife and I looked forward to each show,one that we both enjoyed watching together.For that is not always an easy thing to do.Will miss the show.
No! Please reconsider. At least consider doing a short season of say 6 or 8 episodes. Certainly the ratings justify keeping it for another season.
My question is why is it being cancelled if it is so popular and successful. I hope they reconsider.
WOW, surely I wish you would reconsider. Maybe write at least a short season to bring everything to a close. I really, really enjoyed this show as well as the characters… I am so sad to see it go… hopefully I will like the spinoff.

No!! PLease say it isn’t so! My sister& I Finally found a show that we can watch together (you have No idea how hard that is). Maybe Netflix or another channel will be so brave as to pick this Wonderful & historical show up. The popularity of the show Has to mean Something! Truly disappointed in History Channel !

No! Not only do I love this show, and use it to teach some of our history with it, but I am descended from Rollo himself, though he was not Ragnar’s brother, but his great nephew. I will truely miss this show, it has been awesome to watch it unfold.
